University Professor (all genders)

Specialist field of Electromagnetic Drive Systems

TU Wien is Austria's largest institution of research and higher education in the fields of technology and natural sciences. With over 26,000 students and more than 4000 scientists, research, teaching, and learning dedicated to the advancement of science and technology have been conducted here for more than 200 years, guided by the motto "Technology for People". As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society.

At the Institute of Mechatronics and Power Electronics of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at TU Wien, the position of a University Professor in the field of Electromagnetic Drive Systems with temporary contractual employment (5 years, full-time) is to be filled as of September 1st, 2025.

This is a professorship regulated by § 99 para. 1 of the 2002 Universities Act (UG).

The position as professor for Electromagnetic Drive Systems has been allocated to the following TUWien Focal Areas of Research: „Energy and Environment“ and „Information and Communication Technology".

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at TU Wien is active in 5 research areas: photonics, micro- and nanoelectronics, telecommunications, systems and automation technology, and energy technologies and systems. The advertised professorship is assigned to Mechatronics and Power Electronics Institute (E369, founding of the institute in September 2025), which conducts application-oriented fundamental research in the fields of mechatronics, power electronics, electric drive systems, scientific instrumentation, opto-electronics and measurement systems.

The task of the advertised professorship is to conduct application-oriented fundamental research in the fields of electromagnetic energy converters, actuators, electrical machines and drive systems, as well as their system integration with the associated power electronics and the overall mechatronic system, with the research objective of developing design methods for Pareto-optimal systems and their implementation for the respective application domain in order to achieve maximum performance in the respective application. Examples include but are not limited to electromobility, additive manufacturing, lithography systems in the semiconductor industry, production technology and in-process measurement technology, as well as robotics and autonomous systems.

The Professorship of Electromagnetic Drive Systems represents these future topics in both research and teaching at TU Wien and fits into the existing research areas “Energy Technologies and Energy Systems” and “Systems and Automation Engineering” of the Faculty of ETIT.

The field of research of the future post holder should focus on at least three of the following areas:

  • Design, optimization and control of electromechanical actuators and positioning systems, such as integration of linear actuators and rotating machines in one unit
  • Magnetic bearings for positioning systems with up to 6 degrees of freedom and for high-speed electric drives
  • Inductive charging and wireless power transmission in drive systems
  • System integration of power electronics and electrical machines for maximum efficiency and precision, e.g. by means of innovative design, new semiconductors (SiC, GaN) in the inverter, and new modulation techniques.

In addition to research, the tasks of a university professor at TU Wien also include teaching (in German and English) in Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs as well as participation in the management of the institute and the faculty. Teaching responsibilities include, in particular, teaching in basic subjects such as “Electrical Machines and Drives” in the Bachelor's and Master's programs as well as special courses in the field of electromagnetic drive systems.
