Senior IT Systems Engineer (all genders)
40 hours/week | limited to 1 year with an option for permanent employment
At the Institute of Information Systems Engineering, in the Research Units of Software Engineering and Business Informatics TU Wien is offering a position as Senior IT Systems Engineer (all genders) for 40 hours/week. Expected start: June 2026. Initially, the position is limited to expected 1 year with an option for permanent employment. This is not a conventional university IT support position. You are not simply maintaining systems — you are responsible for their stability, security, scalability, and long-term viability.
Tasks:
Core Responsibilities - Your work spans infrastructure architecture, operations, and strategic development, including:
- Designing, operating, and optimizing Linux and Microsoft server environments
- Continuous infrastructure automation (Ansible, Terraform) and operational improvement through targeted infrastructure monitoring
- Administering physical and virtual infrastructure (Proxmox, VMware) and operating container platforms (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Implementing and maintaining network infrastructure (IP configuration, VLANs, routing, firewall systems)
- Managing identity and access management (including LDAP/Active Directory)
- Designing backup, recovery, and lifecycle strategies for hardware and software (RAID)
Teaching at Scale - A core responsibility is the design and operation of a large-scale GitLab infrastructure supporting software development education of thousands of students per semester, including:
- Designing and operating a large-scale GitLab infrastructure for the faculty’s software engineering and model engineering courses
- Ensuring a reliable, scalable, and secure software repository and deployment platform
- Maintaining high availability during peak submission phases
Research Enablement - You will enable data-driven research workflows by providing robust compute, storage, and network environments. Our research involves classical machine learning (ML) pipelines as well as deployments involving large language models (LLMs). Your responsibilities include:
- Supporting ML and LLM deployments in virtualized (Proxmox, VMware) and containerized (Docker, Kubernetes) environments
- Close technical collaboration with researchers to implement experimental requirements
- Performance optimization and resource/capacity planning
Coordination & Operations - In addition to core infrastructure responsibilities, you will:
- Coordinate with TU Wien’s dataLAB and central IT services
- Manage procurement of IT infrastructure and software licenses
- Maintain documentation and ticketing systems
- Provision, configure, and operate server software
- Oversee physical infrastructure components such as workstations and printers
- Apply configuration management and automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Terraform)
Your profile:
You have completed technical education in IT (HTL, FH, university degree), or equivalent. We are looking for:
- Expert Generalist: You have deep experience with Linux and Windows administration, virtualization (Proxmox), containers (Docker), and CI/CD (GitLab). You don't need to know our specific stack on day one, but you have the drive to own the ecosystem
- Organizational Pro: You quickly understand needs, anticipate challenges, and proactively enhance infrastructure, all this for two research units simultaneously
- Communication & Culture: You value direct, concise, and open communication in person and in writing. You are fluent in English (working language) and proficient in German (required for university administration and vendors)
We offer:
- Impact: A role where your contributions are visible and essential. No two weeks are the same
- Environment: A prestigious, top-ranked technical university with a collaborative, international flair
- Location: Central Vienna, excellent public transport access, with flexible working hours
- Growth: Access to modern tech and freedom to implement your own solutions, with a high degree of personal responsibility
- A range of attractive employee benefits (see Benefits)
People with special needs are equally encouraged to apply. In case of any questions, please contact the confidant for disabled persons at the university, Mr. Gerhard Neustätter.
Entry level salary is determined by the level IVA of the Austrian collective agreement for university staff. This is a minimum of currently EUR 3,450.30/month gross, 14 times/year for 40 hours/week. Relevant working experiences may increase the monthly income.
We look forward to receiving your application until May 7th, 2026.
