Senior Scientist (all genders)

At the Institute of Materials Science and Technology, in the Research Unit of Materials Science TU Wien is offering a position as senior scientist (all genders) for 40 hours/week. Expected start: February 2026.

Tasks:

  • Independent research work n the field of materials development using physical vapor deposition
  • Independent teaching of courses and holding of examinations as well as supervision of students in particular in materials science, materials testing, fracture mechanics, materials physics, and surface engineering, including participation in examinations
  • The ability to develop methods, concepts, as well as their realization and evaluation and the willingness to manage projects or workimg groups
  • Participation in organizational and administrative tasks as well as in evaluation measures of the research division and the faculty

Your profile:

  • Completion of an appropriate doctorate in the field of mechanical engineering, materials science, or process engineerin or equivalent university studies at home or abroad
  • Knowledge of scientific work as well as excellent specialist knowledge in materials science, materials physics, fracture mechanics, surface engineering, physical vapor deposition and in-depth knowledge of the subject area plasma-assisted evaporation methods (laboratory and industrial systems), development of nanocomposites and superlattices and their characterization (mechanical characterization such as nanoindentation and in-situ fracture toughness measurements, thermal analysis), as well as structural characterization using high-resolution and analytical techniques (in-situ synchrotron studies or atom probe tomography)
  • Interdisciplinary work
  • Experience in teaching and publication activities as well as interest and pleasure in research and work/support with students
  • Organisational and analytical skills as well as a structured way of working
  • Excellent knowledge of German (native level or certified CEFR level C1), very good knowledge of English

Entry level salary is determined by the pay grade B1 of the Austrian collective agreement for university staff. This is a minimum of currently EUR 4,932.90/month gross, 14 times/year for 40 hours/week. Relevant working experiences may increase the monthly income.
